The University of Oxford’s EMPRES Collective and Modern Art Oxford present:

The Art of Noises II

Featuring

The Radiophonic Workshop

The EMPRES Collective and Modern Art Oxford present another evening of aural adventure in the shape of the Art of Noises series!

EMPRES will take over the Modern Art Oxford galleries to present a series of innovative performances and installations that explore the boundaries between music, sound and technology.

This time, we are fortunate to welcome the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop to stage a practice focused electronic music masterclass, plus hold discussion on everything from the avant-garde works of Delia Derbyshire and Daphne Oram, to the Dr Who theme tune!

As a response to the Radiophonic Workshop being in Oxford, the Young Women’s Music Project  are collaborating with EMPRES and TORCH on a series of workshops for local female electronic music producers leading up to the event. The YWMP is an educational charity based in Oxford, which provides an inclusive and supportive space for young women aged 14-21 to make music together, learn new skills, express themselves, and grow in confidence.

They will be taking inspiration from the techniques and materials of pioneer electronic music composer, Delia Derbyshire; original member of the Radiophonic Workshop, to produce new music and a performance on the night.

Also that evening, Internationally renowned sound artist Signe Lidèn is producing a site-specific installation and performance.  Signe is interested in how places and their histories resonate; in memory, through narratives and various materials, as ideological manifestations and political territories.

There will be performances from the EMPRES Synth Ensemble, the Oxford music graduate and undergraduate community, and Wythamscapes - an innovative installation and live performance based on sounds and ambience recorded overnight in the iconic woodland, as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations.
