Emma Turnbull is a Lecturer in History at Jesus College and an early career researcher in the History Faculty, having completed her D.Phil at Balliol College in 2017. Her AHRC-funded doctoral research explored the impact of anti-popery languages on the political and print cultures of early Stuart England. During her D.Phil she collaborated with TORCH on a ‘Story Intervention’ project at Ham House (2015-16), providing Ham with an innovative, research-driven interpretation of a key portrait in its collection – a John Hoskins miniature of Katherine Murray (c. 1638). Emma is now investigating the links between her work on early modern religious and political culture and women’s experiences and agency during the Civil Wars.
