Professor Sir Christopher Bayly will give a lecture on 'Marshall G S Hodgson, Islam and World History' with response by Dr Faisal Devji (St Antony's College). This event is part of the Humanitas Visiting Professorship in Historiography with Professor Sir Christopher Bayly (Emeritus Professor of Imperial and Naval History, University of Cambridge). The series of Humanitas events are called 'Worlds of Thought: Empires, India and Islam'. 

Christopher Bayly is Emeritus Professor of Imperial and Naval History and Emeritus Fellow of St Catharine's College, University of Cambridge. He is also Director of the Centre of South Asian Studies there. He has written extensively in India in the colonial period; more broadly on world history. Professor Bayly is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society and was knighted for 'services to history outside Europe' in 2007. He is also a member of the editorial board of Past and Present.
