I’m Professor of English and a Fellow of Magdalen College, University of Oxford. Before coming to Oxford I was Reader in English Language at the University of Glasgow. My teaching and research focuses on the English language and its use in society, both in the past and today. Recently I’ve been particularly interested in spelling and punctuation, and the sociolinguistic importance of ideas of correctness and standards in English usage more generally. I’ve written books on the history of the English language, on the language of particular literary authors, and am currently writing A Very Short Introduction to the English Language for OUP.
