Towards a diverse university: lessons from the Global South

Since 2001 many Brazilian universities have been implementing affirmative actions programmes that aim to address Brazil’s deep inequalities. Different universities have adopted different systems, including quotas or points systems to increase the chances of poor, black, and indigenous students in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, enabling students to gain a place to study at prestigious public universities.

In this discussion TORCH Visiting Professor Marcio Goldman, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, will share his insights into affirmative action and its consequences for Higher Education in Brazil. Professor Goldman will be joined by colleagues who will speak about diversity in South African, South Asian, and UK Higher Education. The discussion will be chaired by Dr Elizabeth Ewart.
