Developing Critical Reading Techniques

A person, seated on the floor and leaning against a bookshelf, reading a book in a library

Most of us are doing lots of reading – that’s the easy part, right? But we’re not always reading the most effective way. Although we accumulate lots of material and ideas, we struggle to turn it into academic writing. In this interactive workshop, we’ll look at several techniques for becoming a more efficient and productive reader. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clear strategy for getting the most out of your reading sessions.

Learning Outcomes:

Following this workshop participants will

  • Learn how to assess potential sources, including using tools and tips to assess whether to read something in greater depth

  • Understand how to ask critical questions of your text

  • Understand when to stop reading

  • Develop your own reading strategy
