Ioannis Stouraitis obtained his BA Diploma in History at the University of Ioannina in 1999, his MA in Medieval Studies at the University of Ioannina in 2002 and his 2007 Ph.D. in Byzantine Studies, University of Vienna in 2007. His thesis was 'War in Byzantium: A study on Byzantine political and ideological perceptions of warfare, 7th-11th c. From 2008-2011 he was a Full-time researcher at the Institute for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna. From 2009 until the present he has been Adjunct Lecturer at the Institute for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna. From 2012-2015 he was a Fullt-time researcher and project coordinator at the Institute for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna.
His research interests include: social identities and visions of community in the Byzantine world; social aspects of Byzantine warfare and military power; history of ideas of war and peace - Byzantine war ethic in a comparative perspective; and the social role of Byzantine historiography.
