Sam is a co-convenor of the “Life Itself in Theory and Practice” Network. His doctoral research, supported by the Wolfson Foundation, explores speculative futures in the fiction of Marie Darrieussecq, Michel Houellebecq, Jean-Christophe Rufin, and Antoine Volodine. His work examines themes of evolution, mutation, genetic manipulation, and extinction and the anxieties surrounding them, particularly with respect to the concept of the “human”. Sam’s research straddles multiple theoretical areas, including posthuman theory, the new materialisms, continental philosophy, and science studies. He is fascinated by questions of “life” and the ways in which discourses of life intertwine through culture, literature, politics, and science.
