Advancing Medical Professionalism: Integrating Evidence-based Humanities Teaching in the University of Oxford’s Medical School

Funded by the John Fell Fund and ISSF

Since 2019 a group of clinicians and humanities scholars have been working together to integrate evidence-based humanities teaching into the University of Oxford’s Medical School. Primarily working within the Brain and Behaviour unit in fifth-year clinical teaching, the program draws from narrative theory, museum studies, history, theology, and ethics to help students critically engage with ideas of professionalism and professional identity. The Royal College of Physicians’ 2018 document Advancing Medical Professionalism has been has provided the foundational framework for the initiative. We have also developed teaching in other areas of the curriculum such as women’s and reproductive health and anatomy.
