To kick off its new funded year, the Colonial Ports and Global History (CPAGH) Network at TORCH, The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities will host an interdisciplinary workshop, ‘Decolonising colonial ports and global history: rethinking archives of power’ on Saturday, 9 November 2019 at the TORCH Seminar Room at Radcliffe Humanities. Lunch and tea/coffee will be provided.
The workshop will begin in the morning with the ‘Port Café’ – a participatory discussion in the style of a World Café. The three invited hosts (Erica Charters, Philip Burnett, Priya Atwal) will address such cutting-edge topics as ‘reading subaltern power beyond colonial and imperial archives’, ‘hearing sonic archives and dissonant oral histories’, and ‘re/examining local archives and practices across the Global North and South’.
In the afternoon, and following from the Port Café, there will be themed panels on the related perspectives of gender and intersectional identities in colonial ports and port cities, and globality, im/mobility, and ‘histories from below’. The confirmed presenters are Katrina Gulliver, Urvi Khaitan, and Stephanie Mawson (gender panel); Paris Chronakis, Tamara Fernando, Maziyar Ghiabi, and Stephen Legg (globality panel).
The workshop will conclude with an open-floor discussion.
