Humanities Cultural Programme Visiting Fellowship Announcement

As part of the Humanities Cultural Programme, we are delighted to announce that Tom Hammick has been awarded a HCP Visiting Fellowship.

Tom Hammick is the creator of paintings, woodcuts, prints, drawings, monotypes and tapestries. His subjects have included the deep North, lunar voyages, boats and bodies of water, the night, forests—all of which are characterized by silence and stillness. Kate is writing a literary history of silence and editing an anthology of poems about silence.  In their conversations they will discuss the creation, significance and history of silence in painting and poetry, juxtaposing pictures and texts in a mutually illuminating way.  The conversations will focus on (1) The Silent Vision (2) The Colour of Silence and (3) Silence & Perspective.  

Tom Hammick's Visiting Fellowships will not take place physically in Oxford due to current lockdown and government guidance. However he will be joining us remotely to offer a series of events and activities that link to  projects and their work.

This visiting fellowship will include a series of online talks and workshops. The application is led by Prof Kate McLoughlin who says: "The Humanities Cultural Programme funding has enabled Tom and me to share each other's worlds - worlds of mesmerizing words and colours. Tom has had the experience of hearing someone respond to his artistic works from a literary perspective, and I have learned about what silence looks like to a visual imagination. We are delighted to be able to share our worlds to a wider audience with support from the TORCH team, as part of the HCP."
