The British Academy’s new Rising Star Engagement Awards (BARSEA) enables established early career scholars to actively engage in the work of the Academy and to enhance their own skills and career development through the organisation of events, training, and mentoring activities for a wide range of other early career researchers.

We are pleased to announce that TORCH Early Career Researcher Dr Imaobong Umoren, who is also a member of the TORCH Race and Resistance and Women in Humanities programmes, has been awarded the prestigious award for a project exploring 'The Global Pursuit of Equality: Women, Networks and Networking 1800-2000’. Dr Umoren said 'I am very excited about receiving the award and hope to bring scholars working in the humanities and social sciences together to deepen understandings about the complex relationship between equality, women and networks.'

The interdisciplinary project will include a workshop and conference for early career scholars exploring how a range of literary, religious, suffrage, feminist, nationalist, academic, scientific and medical networks pushed for equality and their successes and limitations. It will also examine links between local and global networks and the gendered practice of networking.
