As part of my Knowledge Exchange Fellowship, Learning Pragmatics through Chatbot, the Case of Korean, I have closely worked with the Korean Embassy’s Korean Education Centre in raising awareness of Korean language and culture and teaching Korean pragmatics through Korean wave contents such as films, particularly among British youth and the public. During the 2020 lock down I gave 10 public talks related to the project. All the talks were attended by 80-100 pupils. In March 2021 I was invited by the Korea Culture Centre at the 19th K-pop academy to present “Korean language through the Korean Wave.” There were 73 attendees and I received I received 37 positive online reviews. Due to the growing interest in Korean language and culture via the Korean wave, I have given 5 lectures on Korean politeness and pragmatics state secondary school pupils who are learning Korean particularly using Korean films to teach dynamic, complex aspects of pragmatics. Although the project has been disturbed by the pandemic, the app to assist pragmatic learning has continued to be developed in collaboration with Eggbun app and currently 17,315 people are currently learning the course.
Most recently, I have given another talk about Korean Film Minari for Korean Culture Centre UK from a socio-pragmatic perspective.
Korean American director Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical film Minari (2020) tells the story of a Korean American immigrant family who move to Arkansas to start a Korean vegetable farm in the hope of a more prosperous life.
