On Monday, the OCCT Discussion Group heard Coraline Jortay discuss the challenges she faced when translating the flash fiction of contemporary Atayal writer Walis Nokan.

1. IMLR Funded and non-Funded Visiting Fellowships 2021-22
The Institute is pleased to invite applications for Visiting Fellowships and Visiting Scholarships, tenable for 2021-22. Opportunities exist with or without funding to conduct research into any field relevant to the work of the Institute. Applications in categories 1, 2, 3 and 4 must be made by 14 May 2021 (please click on the respective link for further details and information on how to apply).
Non-Stipendiary Visiting Fellowships and Scholarships
Visiting Fellowships and Visiting Scholarships are available annually on a non-stipendiary basis, tenable at the Institute or hosted within one of the IMLR's research centres:

Funded Fellowships and Scholarships in Germanic Studies (Sylvia Naish)
Endowed by a generous bequest from the estate of Sylvia Naish, up to two Fellowships or Scholarships are offered annually for research into any area of German language and literature at the Institute and its Germanic Studies Library and Archives. The awards are designed to assist scholars in the early stages of their careers, to provide a contribution to temporary living expenses in London, or enable those in employment to take leave to further their studies. Fellowships/Scholarships should not be held concurrently with another fellowship or award.
Funded Fellowships in German-Speaking Exile Studies (Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller)
Sponsored by the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Trust, funding is available for researchers in the field of German-speaking exile in the UK wishing to work at the Institute's Germanic Studies Library and its Archives. The Exile Archive dates to 1996-97, when the collection was established at the then Institute of Germanic Studies (now Institute of Modern Languages Research). The Institute already held the papers of several individuals such as Rudolf Majut, Herbert Thoma and Berthold Auerbach, who were exiled from Germany and Austria during the 1930s as a result of persecution under the National Socialist regime. Since the Research Centre for German & Austrian Exile Studies was set up, the Institute has attracted further significant donations and bequests, among the most important being the papers of the Anglo-Austrian Society and the archive of Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller.The Fellowship(s) are open to applicants from the UK and overseas. Candidates should have completed their doctorate and have a strong publications record. The Fellowship(s) are designed to provide a contribution to temporary living expenses in London, or to enable those in employment to take leave to further their studies. Awards are typically made for periods of between one and three months.
CLACS Early Career Fellowship in Latin American and Caribbean Studies
The purpose of this scheme is to provide support to early career scholars in Latin American and Caribbean Studies with relevant subject expertise to pursue innovative and interdisciplinary research in an environment tailored to such work, free from the competitive institutional constraints of other UK university institutions. The scheme enables the Fellow to engage a broad range of UK and international scholars in their research through the formation of networks and through collaboration in research projects, publications and dissemination events such as workshops, conferences and public engagement activities.
The 2021-2022 CLACS Early Career Fellowship scheme will provide for one position with funding for six months during the 2021-2022 academic year (between 1 October 2021 and 30 June 2022).
School of Advanced Study Fellowships
Visiting Fellowships and Scholarships are open to applicants from the UK and overseas. Candidates applying for Fellowships should have completed their doctorate and have a strong publications record. Doctoral students may apply for Visiting Scholarships.
2. The AHRC and Future Developments

Speaker: Christopher Smith (AHRC)
We are very pleased to announce that Christopher Smith, Executive Chair of the AHRC, will be talking to the Modern Languages community about future developments in research funding. The talk will focus on the narrative surrounding Arts and Humanities research and emphasise the value of transformation in a rapidly changing context.
The talk will be followed by a Q and A session.
3. Queen’s Translation Exchange
We are delighted to announce that the translator and writer taking up the 2021 QTE Korean residency will be Anton Hur and Bora Chung. The residency will be entirely virtual, and will provide time for the translator and writer to work together on new translations, as well as to co-deliver virtual events. Anton will also be collaborating with QTE to produce a translation resource for schools. The residency will take place from 24 May to 3 June, and is kindly supported by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea.

A Lecture on Translation: Anton Hur on the work of Bora Chung

In this lecture Anton Hur will describe his personal process as a literary translator along with some of the specifics of Korean to English translation. A brief Q&A will be included.
A Public Reading of the work of Bora Chung in Translation

All are welcome; no knowledge of Korean required.
Guests will hear a public reading of some of Bora Chung’s recent work in Korean and then translated into English, followed a brief Q&A session.
A Conversation between Author and Translator: Anton and Bora

A chance to hear how a translator and author work together: a pre-recorded conversation between Bora Chung and Anton Hur about her work and the translation process they undertake together. Keep an eye on our website and social media on the day for the link.
