On the Nature of Things is an interdisciplinary podcast by Chloe Fairbanks and Mary Hitchman which explores people's relationships with the natural world from 700 to 1700. Topics covered include trees, natural magic, the cosmos, and the harvest, and the geographic focus is on England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
Each episode features an interview with a specialist, readings of historical texts by actors, and a plethora of sounds recorded in Oxford’s green spaces. One of the foremost aims of this project is to combine social history with an ecocritical approach, encouraging reflection upon how our own understandings of nature have developed over time.
