Professor Kate McLoughlin and Dr. Suzan Meryem Rosita Kalayci of Oxford's Silence Hub performed John Cage's 4'33" (1952) on cello and tin-whistle at the Humanities Light Night on 15 November 2015. The piece consists of silence and whatever sounds are made by the audience. Audience-members were challenged, moved, soothed and intrigued. Asked how silence might form a source of strength, one person replied that it was 'the perfect environment to still the mind or clarify thinking'. Another said, 'during arguments, silence is empowering'.
