The HitType LaTeX Package

The HitType LaTeX package represents the second installment in my growing set of LaTeX tools developed for researchers dealing with Anatolian languages. Already on its second minor version revision, this package is structured much like the LuwianType package, providing a set of tailored commands which generate characters in Hittite cuneiform. The package utilizes the Ullikummi fonts, produced by Dr Sylvie Vanséveren and distributed through HethPort

As with LuwianType, the package is platform-agnostic and allows typing in Hittite without installing fonts on one’s computer directly or needing to type individual Unicode characters according to their Unicode values. The commands for signs are based on the standard English names for the cuneiform signs, listed in the included package documentation as produced by Dr Vanséveren. Aside from the sign commands, further functionality is included which allows for easy formatting of transcriptions of Hittite text, including dealing easily with heterographic words having determinatives, Sumero- and Akkadograms, and phonetic complements. Commands are also provided which reference common transcription requirements such as half brackets, angled equals signs for enclitics, and more.

This package allows easy typing using Latin characters to produce Hittite text, and simplifies the process of transcription and interlinear glossing. It is available on my own website at glottophilos.com or on the official CTAN LaTeX repositories at ctan.org. This package should be a powerful tool both for beginners studying Hittite, or for more experienced researchers looking for a simple way to include cuneiform text in their published work.
