Ashmolean Project Portal Gallery Lecture

John Sell Cotman

During the 1940s, British drawing appeared to be flourishing amidst widespread debate about the merits of previous generations of British art.  Using the writings of Wyndham Lewis – artist, author, and outspoken critic – as a guide, this tour will explore how the history of British drawing was viewed in the 1940s and how it shaped the art of this decade. This tour is part of the Ashmolean’s University Engagement Programme’s Project Portal, supported by TORCH, and will be led by Beau Woodbury, a PhD candidate in History.
