Call for Papers – Oxford Scandinavian Studies Network, 2024-2025 Academic Year
The Oxford Scandinavian Studies Network is an interdisciplinary TORCH Student Network (The Oxford Research Centre for the Humanities) established in 2023 and based at the University of Oxford. The Network is led by Sarah Fengler, Leif Hammer, Marie Martine, and Tzen Sam and offers an intellectually stimulating platform where researchers on Scandinavia can share and discuss one another’s work. Our goal is to strengthen interest in Scandinavia as a region and promote exciting new scholarship. The Network will support postgraduate participants in developing their ideas into finished papers or chapters and foster collaboration between local and international scholars at various career stages.
We are inviting paper proposals by doctoral students for our online seminar sessions in Hilary Term 2025 (10-12 GMT on the following four Fridays: 31st January, 14th February, 28th February, 14th March) and our in person-workshop in Oxford in Trinity Term 2025 (Friday, 6th June). Papers can address any topic related to post-Reformation Scandinavia up until the present and may take any disciplinary or interdisciplinary approach within the Humanities and Social Sciences (historical, literary, sociological, etc.). Proposals exploring the region from a transnational perspective are particularly welcome, as we wish to consider Scandinavian entanglements, whether aesthetic, historical, or cultural in nature, within a
broader global context.
Format
The purpose of the online sessions and the in-person workshop is to foster a supportive environment for eight postgraduate speakers to develop their initial ideas into finished chapters or papers. In each of the four fortnightly seminar sessions in January, February, and March, two postgraduate speakers will present their initial ideas for a specific chapter or paper, followed by a plenary discussion. Presentations should last ca. 20 minutes.
In preparation for the in-person roundtable workshop, all eight speakers will turn their presentations into a written draft to be circulated within the group in advance of the workshop. Drafts will be treated strictly confidentially and not shared with anyone else apart from the other speakers and the organisers. Given the work-in-progress format of these events, selected speakers are required to attend and present at both the online seminar sessions and the in-person workshop.
