Ashmolean After Hours: Tokyo Art & Photography as part of Japan Season

Event date: Friday 5 November, 5pm-8pm

Tokyo Art & Photography, the upcoming exhibition at the Ashmolean is a celebration of one of the world’s most creative, dynamic and thrilling cities. Explore Japan’s capital city through the vibrant arts it has generated over 400 years. It will feature a wide variety of artworks and highlights include historic folding screens and iconic woodblock prints, video works, pop art, and contemporary photographs by Moriyama Daido and Ninagawa Mika.

TORCH will be collaborating with the Ashmolean for a special After Hours Event on Friday 5th November 2021 as part of the Tokyo Art & Photography exhibition, and as part of the Japan Season 2021 - a programme of exciting activity hosted by TORCH.

This event is part of the Humanities Cultural Programme.

We are looking for students and researchers to take part in the After Hours event on Friday 5th November.

  • Does your research or study relate to Japan in any context?
  • Are you a musician or performer with an interest in Japanese music or performing arts?
  • Would you be interested in offering a short bite-sized talk, or hosting an activity during the After Hours event at the Ashmolean?
  • Are you interested in engaging wider and public audiences?

We will be programming an exciting series of activities for the After Hours event including:

  • A series of 10 minute bite-sized talks
  • Interactive activities for visitors of all ages
  • Musical, theatrical, or spoken word performances

Would you like to take part?

If you have an idea and would like to participate in this event please send your suggestions to hcp@torch.ox.ac.uk by Friday 24th September 2021:

Your expression of interest should include:

1. Your full name, Oxford Humanities Faculty and your position/area of study

2. Any previous experience in wider public engagement with research (this is not essential)

3. Brief summary of your idea for an activity, talk or performance

4. Any equipment/materials needed (if known at this stage)

All participants will receive support from the TORCH team to develop their activity for the night, plus the experience of working within a museum environment.

The TORCH team will also be carrying out audience evaluation, which we will pass on to all participants so that they have evidence of their work from the night. This may be useful for future funding applications etc.

The event will be documented via photography and a short highlights film, and will be publicised through the TORCH website, social media and newsletters.
