“Whiteness” as a physical feature and social concept has existed for millennia and across cultures extending well beyond its contemporary association with Europeans and European colonial conquests. Race and Resistance invites Oxford students, faculty, staff and members of the community to attend our discussion on the historical origins of the concept of “whiteness” and how this term has come to shape the social, economic, and political realities of the contemporary world. We seek to discuss this term from a global and intersectional perspective, understanding the issue as it has affected humanity historically, but also how “whiteness” shapes racial relations within the nation state and geopolitically in the present. A sandwich lunch will be provided; an open mind and an informed discussion is expected.
