Salary circa £70,000 (and pro rata) – equivalent to an Oxford Professorial appointment.

The Europaeum seeks to appoint from 1 October, 2020 a full-time, or near-full time, Director.

The Europaeum, founded in 1992, is an association of leading universities in Europe. The Directorship is a challenging opportunity to work with some of the best students in the world; to connect these students and the faculty in the member universities more closely with each other; and to engage academia with the wider European society. The person appointed will need to have exceptional interpersonal skills, the ability to lead, and the capacity to combine high level teaching, research and policy formation in fresh and imaginative ways. It is likely to appeal to someone who wishes to make a difference and who enjoys the worlds of both academia and policy.

The Europaeum has recently undergone a significant restructuring and reinvigoration. This has included increasing its membership from eleven to sixteen and launching a new, and highly successful, Europaeum Scholarship programme for a select group of outstanding doctoral students drawn from the member universities. The primary tasks of the new Director will be to build on these achievements; to refresh the many ‘core’ activities of the Europaeum, ranging from Spring and Summer schools to seminars, workshops and conferences; to press ahead with establishing an Alumni Network; and to assist in fundraising.

The Director will work in close association with the Executive Chair of the Europaeum, currently Dr Andrew Graham, former Master of Balliol College, Oxford, and under the guidance of a distinguished set of Trustees, chaired by Lord (Chris) Patten (Chancellor of Oxford University) and including Professor Barroso (former President of the European Commission), Baroness (Margaret) Jay (former leader of the House of Lords) and Mr Lamy (former Director of the WTO) – a full list can be consulted on the Europaeum’s website www.europaeum.org

The Europaeum office is located in Oxford (but is not a part of the University of Oxford) where the Director will be responsible for a small staff, primarily a full-time Administrator and the Programme Director who oversees the new Europaeum Scholarships. It is expected that the successful applicant will become a Senior Member of one of the Oxford colleges. Applications will be considered from, but not limited to, those interested in holding the post as a five-year secondment. Please find the job description here:

The closing date for applications is 26 September, 2019.  Interviews will be held in Geneva on the afternoon of Thursday, 21 November, 2019. Regrettably, there is no flexibility in these dates.
