Dr Elliot Evans (University of Birmingham) will be presenting a paper on ‘This is 4Real: the authority of the material body in transgender debates’ while Dr Charlotte Ross (University of Birmingham) will present a paper on ‘Exemplary’ lesbians: the struggle for “adequate” representation’. Dr Elliot Evans is a Lecturer in French Studies, Gender and Sexuality at the University of Birmingham. They are the author of numerous publications on gender and sexuality, and have been invited to speak on these areas at academic conferences, cultural and activist events both in the UK and internationally. They are a co-organiser of the Critical Sexology interdisciplinary seminar series and are particularly engaged in debates around feminist, queer and transgender theories.
Dr Charlotte Ross is Senior Lecturer in Italian Studies at the University of Birmingham Her research focuses on issues of gender, sexuality, and embodiment in Italian culture and society. Her publications include the monographs Eccentricity and Sameness. Discourses on Lesbianism and Desire between Women in Italy, 1860s-1930s (Oxford and New York: Peter Lang 2015), Primo Levi's Narratives of Embodiment: Containing the Human (New York: Routledge, 2011), and several chapters and articles on topics such as LGBT activism in Italy and ‘lesbian’ representation in Italian fiction.
