Pembroke College, in partnership with The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), wishes to appoint a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in Black British Studies. The fellow’s primary research interests should focus on people of African and/or Caribbean descent in Britain and/or Ireland, and this may include the interaction between Britain and the Caribbean, the Atlantic, and the African diaspora more widely. Preference will be given to candidates who work in the fields of history, literature, economics, law, politics or religion. The appointment will be from 1 September 2021 for three years.
The Fellow will be expected to conduct original research in their chosen field and to be involved in the wider life of Pembroke College (www.pmb.ox.ac.uk) and the development of their discipline within the college.
The Fellowship will be based at Pembroke and the Fellow will also be part of the early career research community at TORCH (www.torch.ox.ac.uk) and would be encouraged to participate in the Race and Resistance Research Programme at TORCH (www.torch.ox.ac.uk/race-and-resistance-across-borders-in-the-long-twentieth-century).
The Fellow may be invited to do a limited amount of paid teaching for the College or the appropriate faculty and may be asked to be involved in the undergraduate admissions process at the end of Michaelmas Term (admissions training will be provided if so).
We welcome applications from doctoral students who are nearing completion of their doctorate and early career researchers who have completed their doctorate in the last three years (early career candidates who have finished their doctorate prior to that but have taken career breaks are also welcome to apply). Preference will be given to applicants who have not already held an academic post which has enabled them to focus on research primarily.
The stipend for the role is £30,000 per annum. Benefits include a research allowance of £1,545 per annum (at the discretion of the College) and all lunches and dinners when the College kitchens are open. Further particulars are available below.
Applications should be submitted by email to academichr@pmb.ox.ac.uk by 12 noon on April 26th 2021, and should include:
- A letter of application explaining why you wish to be considered for this position;
- A curriculum vitae setting out details of your higher education, research and any publications to date;
- A research proposal (no more than 1,000 words);
- Supporting letters from three academic referees, which are to be sent separately to the email address above.
Candidates who are successful in the initial sift will be asked to submit a piece of published or unpublished research (no more than 8,000 words)
Interviews are planned to be held in the week commencing 31st May 2021.
Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. The College is an equal opportunities employer.
