Mechanic Vitality: a roundtable discussion troubling the narrative of a transition from 'vitalist' to 'mechanist' conceptions of nature in the early modern period

In this informal and experimental workshop, participants from a range of disciplinary specialisms will meet to discuss early modern materials that pose a challenge to the dominant narrative of the evolution in the (European/Western) conception of nature in the early modern period. In what ways was the picture more complex, and modes of thought more diverse, than is typically suggested by standard accounts of the age of 'scientific revolution'?
