Overview
This day school is an opportunity to learn and also to share stories about the links between the local history of Oxfordshire and the British empire. Oxfordshire was connected to the empire through its institutions and people, and their involvement in slavery, trading, settlement and exploration. These links are visible in many ways including country houses and architecture, family trees, Oxford’s museums and the University of Oxford. The cultural history of Oxfordshire is deeply imprinted with global connections and we will consider these connections and their legacies for the present. There will also be the chance to handle cups, mugs and tea-time objects which tell a story relating to empire.
At the end of the study day we now plan to take participants to the Ashmoloan Museum to see the exhibition, Nice Cup of Tea.
