The Childhood and Youth Studies Network is delighted to announce its first online seminar. In the seminar, Farida Makar will look at how Egyptian teachers navigated the principles of progressive education during the first half of the twentieth century. The paper will explore concrete examples, local initiatives and the lasting impact of the teachers' movement on the development of educational policy in Egypt.

Speaker:

Farida Makar is a doctoral candidate in history at St. Antony's College, Oxford. Her dissertation focuses on progressive education in Egypt between 1922-1956. From 2015-2018, Farida taught courses on the history of the Modern Middle East and the history of education in Egypt as an adjunct member of the History Faculty at the American University in Cairo. She holds an MSt in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from St Antony's College, Oxford. Follow the link for a list of Farida's publications.
