Social Protest and History in Mexican Comics

22 january mexican comics

Speaker: Anne Magnussen (University of Southern Denmark)

In this presentation Dr. Anne Magnussen discusses how two trends in contemporary Mexican comics use history in order to participate in shaping ideas about Mexican society and identities. One trend concerns socially conscious comics that comment on recent political developments partly through documentation and criticism, and partly through encouraging Mexicans to participate in community work. Another trend represents more subtle reflections on Mexican society through playing with and undermining historical references and events. The presentation represents work relating to the collective research project Comics and the Latin American City (CLAC) managed by James Scorer, University of Manchester.
