The Curatorial within an Institutional Context

 

This talk will focus on the role of the curatorial in an institutional context. It will touch on ways to navigate the institution as a cultural producer or curator and how to fulfil an institution's mandate and vision within its parameters. As a curatorial assistant from the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP) in South Africa, Gillian will be centring the Javett-UP as a case study and will refer to projects the institution has worked on within the areas of research, education mediation, public programming and collaboration.

 

Attendees, academics and students of any level and with any background are welcome. Coffee, tea, and biscuits will be available.

 

Gillian Fleischmann is a Pretoria-based cultural producer, curator and photography-based artist. She is currently a Curatorial Assistant at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria (Javett-UP). Projects she has been involved with include: Curating Javett-UP’s booth at the 2023 FNB Art Joburg at the Sandton Convention Centre, co-curating exhibitions such as SCENORAMA (2022) along with its travelling iteration to eThekwini in 2023, Buffer Zones (2022), and Specifications for a Reverse Archaeology (2023). She was also recently involved as a publication coordinator for the Handle with Care publication (2023) which received the HSS Award under the category, Best Exhibition Catalogue 2024. 

She mostly works as a project manager/ coordinator within creative spaces, including public programming, exhibition making and producing. Gillian enjoys working with artists and seeing their vision come into fruition. She is interested in exploring alternative forms of knowledge production.
