We are pleased to announce 'The Sorrowful Virgin: Medieval and Early Modern Devotion’, an interdisciplinary workshop taking place on 24th March 2025 at St Hugh’s College, association with the Centre for Early Modern Studies and with Oxford Medieval Studies, sponsored by the Oxford Research Centre for the Humanities (TORCH). We look forward to exploring different manifestations of devotions of the Virgin’s Sorrows, both through papers from scholars across history, literature, and history of art, as well as through sessions focused on performance and manuscripts. Our keynote speaker is Prof Lesley Twomey (Northumbria) at 5 pm with a talk entitled: 'The Sorrows of the Virgin Mary at the Foot of the Cross in vernacular Vitae Christi in Medieval France, England and Spain’.
