Reaching new audiences: Trade publishing in Humanities
Have you ever thought using your academic research to publish a trade book, aimed at a broader, non-specialist readership? Trade publishing with established commercial presses offers the chance to write in different ways and reach new audiences. It can help gain greater impact for the work that you do and the stories you have to tell. In the changing landscape of higher education more and more researchers are looking beyond the scholarly monograph towards alternative ways of communicating their ideas and findings – even to generate income!
On 30 September from 2pm-6pm the Bodleian Library and Oxford’s Humanities division are hosting an afternoon of talks, information stalls and networking events designed to help academics at Oxford to understand how trade publishing works. We will explore how trade is different from academic publishing; what the role of agents and editors is; what works and what doesn’t work; what to think about in constructing a proposal, and who to talk to. There will be a chance to speak with individual editors and agents from leading publishers (Faber, Simon and Schuster, Penguin, John Murray, William Collins, and from literary agencies (Rogers, Coleridge and White, Wylie, Felicity Bryan Associates).
Refreshments will be provided!
