Translation and Research in Eighteenth-Century Studies

RESCO logo

The TORCH Romanticism and Eighteenth-Century Studies Oxford (RECSO) network are hosting a series of seminars on Researching the Eighteenth Century. Building on the successful “Teaching the Eighteenth Century” in Michaelmas 2014, this seminar series focuses on various aspects of researching the period. Convened by Dr. Fiona Gatty, these sessions will provide graduate students with some insights into the challenges faced by researchers today. In each session the speaker will talk about their research for 40 minutes, followed by questions and a general discussion for 40-45 minutes.

This seminar is on 'Translation and Research in Eighteenth-Century Studies' with Dr. Kelsey Rubin-Detlev (Queen’s College). Dr Kelsey Rubin-Detlev is the Foote Junior Research Fellow in Russian at The Queen's College. Her research focuses on the correspondence of Catherine the Great and on women's letter writing in eighteenth-century Europe more broadly.

Kelsey's talk will discuss the importance of translation in eighteenth-century studies: as a daily part of our research, as a career option, and as a concept inherent in the material we study. She will then focus on the example of her current translation project in collaboration with Andrew Kahn, Catherine the Great's Selected Letters for Oxford World's Classics.
