Participants invited for an experiment on reading and eating disorders

Staple of pankakes topped with berries arranged on a plate standing in front of a row of books.

The deadline for this study has now passed. Thank you to all involved.

The experiment involves reading a book over a 2-week period and completing 2 questionnaires 1 week before and 2 weeks after reading, as well as several open-ended questions before, after, and at intervals during the reading. If you are assigned to the experimental group, you will read a book about recovery from anorexia called The Hungry Anorexic. If you are assigned to the control group, you will read a book unrelated to eating disorders but dealing with questions about life and identity in another context. You are asked not to read any other books about eating disorders during the roughly 5 weeks during which you take part in the study. If you complete the study, you can choose to be entered into a prize draw to win one of 4 £100 prizes.

To take part, you must:

  • Be 18 years or over.
  • Be / identify as female.
  • Currently have a restrictive eating disorder or be recovering from it.
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 15 or over.
  • Be fluent in English.
  • Be willing to avoid reading other books about eating disorders during the 5 weeks of the study.
