Cindy Oswin is a writer/actor/director working in theatre with a special interest in archive material leading to performance. Commissioned by the British Library, her academic research into Gertrude Stein culminated in writing and performing the solo play ‘A Salon with Gertrude and Alice.’ With Mark Rylance, she wrote ‘The Triumph of Hope’ for Shakespeare’s Globe, a masque for the royal opening event. Her long fascination with Julian of Norwich has led her to enquire into the effects of ageing on a medieval enclosed woman. This new play examines the continuation of Julian’s intense spiritual life within the physical limitations and privations of old age – the anchoress will be interrogated by an ageing contemporary woman who is herself locked in a cell with Julian. The opportunity to participate in an academic conference is a rich opportunity for collaboration between academic perspectives and artistic intention. The conversations with the researchers and discussions with the audience and their feedback will inform the development of Oswin’s longer Julian play.
