Dr Will Bowers (Queen Mary University of London) will explore the significance of Vesuvius, and volcanoes more generally, to the literature and culture of the Romantic Period (1770–1830). The lecture will discuss artists such as J. W. M. Turner and Joseph Wright of Derby, and writers such as William Cowper and the Shelleys, along with some reflections on the significance of volcanoes to the political tumult ofthis revolutionary age.
