Bengal and Modernity: Early 20th Century Art in India
Ashmolean UEP, TORCH and Student Collaborations
The Project Portal offers collaborative opportunities through the Ashmolean Museum University Engagement Programme and the TORCH Knowledge Exchange Programme in order to strengthen existing ties between the Museum and the academic community. Students were invited to develop project ideas linking their research to the exhibition Bengal and Modernity: Early 20th Century Art In India exhibition (3 March – 1 June 2015). Two graduate and four undergraduate students responded with a range of projects designed to bring their courses, dissertations, extended papers and the exhibition to a wider audience.
Co-curated by Shailendra Bhandare (Assistant Keeper, Heberdeen Coin Room) and Mallica Kumbera Landrus (Teaching Curator, University Engagement Programme), the exhibition was supported with research assistance for early label drafts from Pandita Out-Wong (MSt, History Faculty & Wolfson College; Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies). The topic of the exhibition, discussed in courses taught in various departments, reflects on ideas of nationalism, identity and gender studies in early 20th century India.
