Oxford and Empire Walking Tour

Pink background with a black and white logo of the rad cam and a face, and clenched fists. The words 'race and resistance' are painted in red over the top.

Join us for a walking tour of Oxford revealing various aspects of the University's involvement in Britain's imperial past and exploring the lives of the students who have mounted a challenge to the legacies of colonialism. Short talks from lecturers and research students will reveal a different side to the city including:

The architecture of Empire - William Whyte

Oxford and India - Yasmin Khan

Oxford and the sugar trade - Elisabeth Grass

Cecil Rhodes, and RMF - Simukai Chigudu and Ndjodi Ndeunyema

1960s student activism - Stephen Tuck

Malcolm X in Oxford - Michael Joseph

Merze Tate - Barbara Savage

The tour will start at 1.15, and finish with refreshments in the History Faculty at 2.30, and a chance to hear about the first African American woman to study at Oxford.
