Dr Jeanette Atkinson is the Research Network Coordinator for ‘Globalising and Localising the Great War’, which is based in the Faculty of History, and is also an interdisciplinary network of TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities); ‘The First World War and Global Religions’ (Principal investigator: Dr Adrian Gregory, Co-investigator: Dr Faisal Devji) – funded by the AHRC (April 2016-June 2019); and ‘A Transnational Approach to Resistance in Europe, 1936-1948’ (Principal Investigator: Professor Robert Gildea) – funded by The Leverhulme Trust and The Gerry Holdsworth Special Forces Trust (October 2015-September 2018).
As part of her roles, Jeanette works closely with faculty and graduate students to organise events and source external and internal funding. She is responsible for budgets and finance relating to the projects and to maintaining strong communication links across all of the networks. Social media is also an important factor and Jeanette creates and maintains websites and writes blogs for each project. Outreach and public engagement are an increasingly vital part of academia and she works closely with local and regional groups, communities and heritage organisations facilitating engagement with faculty and graduate students, and organising events. Jeanette also provides research assistance to faculty, co-supervises a doctoral student, and carries out her own research into identity, values, heritage, public history and engagement between museums and communities.
Jeanette joined the Faculty of History in September 2014. Prior to that, she worked as a researcher in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford on the AHRC funded 'Cultural Value' project, examining the cultural value of arts and humanities research. She has worked as an Associate Tutor for the School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester since 2004, as Programme Director, Museum Studies by Distance Learning from 2009–2010, and completed her PhD in Museum Studies in the School in 2008. Before working at Leicester, Jeanette worked as an art conservator in a range of national and regional museums in both the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
