Applications are now open for Oxford University students to undertake week-long micro-internships with the National Trust Partnership in December.
Projects include:
- Research into the Clive Collection of Indian artefacts housed at Powis Castle in Wales
- Creating a database of historic census data for some of the National Trust’s flagship properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland
- Mapping the literary and musical connections at Gunby Hall in Lincolnshire
- Research into historic visitor books at Belton House in Lincolnshire to map social circles of residents, guests and visitors
All projects will provide opportunities to gain experience of curatorial research, insights into how research informs heritage projects, and experience of using historical resources. Relevant training will be provided, and you will have the opportunity to visit National Trust sites and meet with relevant project staff.

Census & Home
In 2021 everyone residing in the UK will be required to fill out the census. The National Trust will be making this significant national moment with a year-long programme exploring the theme of home which will draw upon historic census data to underpin public-facing activity. Working with Oxford’s National Trust Partnership in Oxford with a visit to the NT’s head office in Swindon, this Curatorial Research Micro-internship will support the national programme by undertaking research into historic census data for some of the National Trust’s flagship properties across the UK.

Musical and Literary Connections at Gunby Hall
This Curatorial Research Micro-internship will support an upcoming research project seeking to map the musical and literary connections at Gunby Hall, a National Trust property in Lincolnshire. In support of this project, the Micro-internship will concentrate on identifying people – especially writers, composers, musicians, etc. – connected directly, or indirectly, with Gunby and the Massingberds. Where possible, mini-biographies should be provided, as well as details of their connection. This project will be an important component of wider research to inform Gunby’s presentational programme for 2020 – 22. This will explore the artistic circles in which the family moved and those which especially influenced them.

Belton House Project
This Curatorial Research Micro-internship will support an upcoming research project at Belton House, a National Trust property in Lincolnshire. In support of this project, the Micro-internship will concentrate on identifying the names in the visitors’ book, providing mini-biographies for them, and mapping – where possible - the interconnecting social circles. This project will be an important component of wider research that will inform Belton’s public-facing programme for 2021 – 25. This will explore the rise, dominance and decline of the English country house from the 17th to 20th centuries.

The Clive Collection at Powis Castle
The National Trust Partnership is a collaboration between Oxford University and the National Trust, established to create new opportunities for interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange, public engagement with research and training. This micro-internship will support a live project researching the Clive Collection at Powis Castle in Wales, one of the most important collections of Indian artefacts outside of India. Based in Oxford with one day at Powis Castle, you will be responsible for matching up objects in the collection today with historic sources including original inventories, letters, prints and paintings.
