My research examines the linguistic, political, social, and economic issues in relation to language use of the Arabic-speaking diaspora in Spanish-speaking countries to understand how multilingual migrants establish themselves in contemporary society. Specifically, my research (1) characterizes language practices within and across several generations of Arabic-speaking immigrants in Spanish-speaking countries as speakers use features from multiple languages in discourse, (2) explores how identities are enacted through language practices and how speakers position themselves in discourse, and (3) examines attitudes and ideologies (i.e. ideas about language) that may be linked to their linguistic practices. In my primary research context of Granada, Spain, I examine the language practices of Moroccan immigrants and their descendants as well as how these language practices are negotiated with respect to identity, attitudes, and cultural heritage. I have explored these themes within my research community through the development of an edited volume with my co-authors Drs. Farah Ali and Sherez Mohamed. Our book, “The Sociolinguistics of Spanish and Arabic in Contact” is slated to come out in Fall 2025 as well as in recent publications in Multilingua and Discourse & Society.
As part of this project, I am delighted to bring together my passion for research and education. I look forward to engaging in a discussion with artists that utilize their multilingual repertoires to expand our understanding of personal and community identities. I hope to incorporate these questions in the development of the city walk guides to help students explore their own linguistic positions and identities in the context of their world.
