HANNAH M BAILEY

Her research interests are in Early Medieval literature.  She is particularly interested in ways that Old English poets respond to patristic tropes for conceptualizing processes of understanding, and in what poet’s compositional practices reveal about patterns of influence and their expectations of their audiences. She has worked on Old English poetic compounds as a research assistant for CLASP (the Consolidated Library of Anglo-Saxon Poetry), and is currently writing a monograph on Signs, Brightness, and God’s Patronage in Old English Poetry.  

Hannah is a co-founder of an interdisciplinary research network on Architectural Representation in the Middle Ages; the network has organised seminars, a two-day international conference, and a series of public lectures, and has two collaborative publications in the works.

Hannah teaches Medieval Literature, especially Old English. Her main teaching responsibilities at Wadham are the first year papers Introduction to English Language and Early Medieval Literature (650–1350).  She sometimes teaches second year Old English and Middle English papers, and lectures at the English Faculty on Old English poetry.
