QUEERCAMP Network

About

QUEERCAMP is a working group for postgraduates and early career researchers founded in 2021 in Oxford. The acronym is intentionally unwieldy, standing for Queer Understandings of Eastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia (Many Places), in order to draw attention to how "the region" we study is not a homogenous area. Rather, it uneasily ties together communities, languages and contexts which are not sufficiently reflected by conventional naming practices in our field.

QUEERCAMP provides a much-needed platform for disseminating research and sharing awareness of crucial primary sources at a time when many of the places we study have introduced repressive legislation concerning LGBTQ+ people and topics.

Across Hilary and Trinity 2025, we will be hosting a series of events spotlighting queer creativity in “the region” and bringing postgraduates and ECRs together with activists, artists, and dramaturgists. These include:

  • Decolonising Drag and Finding The Clothes That Fit
  • Transforming Queer Eastern European Research into Board Game Design
  • Queer Creativity: Bringing Eastern European and Central Asian LGBTQ+ Research to Life
  • Coffee and Creative Writing: Turning Research into Performance

We hope to see you there! If you are interested in any of these events, joining our mailing list, or have ideas for future collaborations and sessions, please get in touch with us via email: queercamp@torch.ox.ac.uk.
