On Thursday 24 January 2023 members of the Oxford Comics Network met at the Story Museum in Oxford for an evening of storytelling and comics.
Peter Kessler (founder of the comics network, and panellist and host of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival - LICAF) introduced Tom Fickling from The Phoenix – a weekly comic for children aged 7-14. Tom gave a fascinating talk on how The Phoenix began and how it has grown into a successful and popular vehicle for comics for kids that has amazing potential for developing their reading and creativity. In the Q&A, audience members – including local members of the public and students at the University of Oxford – asked about the daily realities of publishing and how translation works in comics. The talk and discussion were followed by a private view of the KA-BOOM! comics exhibition. KA-BOOM! The Art of Creating Comics takes visitors on an interactive journey through the comic-making process to encourage the next generation of comic artists and writer.
