Applications are now open for Oxford University students to undertake a week-long micro-internship with the Oxford University Heritage Network (OUHN) in December 2020. The project will run in 9th Week of Michaelmas Term (week commencing 7 December 2020).

The Oxford University Heritage Network brings together researchers and heritage professionals to address the big challenges facing heritage locally, nationally and internationally. We achieve this through seminars and events, and by engaging with policy makers in government, international organisations, the private sector and the NGO community. The Oxford University Heritage Network is highly interdisciplinary and includes researchers from across the four academic divisions at Oxford: Humanities; Social Sciences; Mathematical and Physical Life Sciences; Gardens Libraries and Museums.

The network, founded in Autumn 2018, is approaching the end of its initial funding cycle. We are ambitious for the next phase of our work, and are exploring the viability of creating a "Heritage Centre" with the University, which would encourage and enable our world-leading researchers to find new ways of responding to the big challenges facing the UK and international heritage sector.

Working alongside the Oxford University Heritage Network's core management team, this micro-internship will provide insights into how collaborative projects between academia and the heritage sector are created, maintained and evaluated.

What you will do:

  • Working remotely as part of a team, you will undertake desk-based research using a range
of online archives and resources to map the landscape of Heritage Centres across UK and international higher education institutions. Each team member will have a particular geographic focus and summary discussions will require individuals to work together to identify common themes and topics.
  • Using online resources and recent publications you will analyse the strengths and weaknesses of existing Heritage Centres, and provide insights into their strategic ambitions, governance and funding structures in the form of a report which will be used by the OUHN core team to inform future strategies.

What you will gain:

  • By the end of the internship you will have gained experience of surveying the international landscape of heritage/academia collaborations, an insight into how research informs heritage projects, and experience of evaluating strategic and policy documents.
  • You will also have the opportunity to compile a research report and discuss your findings at the end of the week with the OUHN core team.

Candidates will be considered from any subject area, from second-year undergraduate level and above. Candidates must demonstrate good written communication skills, experience of using research material, an interest in the heritage sector (broadly defined in accordance with OUHN's commitment to interdisciplinarity) and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
