Applications are now open for Oxford University students to undertake a remote micro-internship with Purcell Architects in June 2021.
Purcell’s Oxford studio is a team of architects and heritage consultants working in a collaborative atmosphere to produce imaginative design solutions. We are committed to ensuring that change in historic places is well-designed and appropriate to its context. We would like the intern to examine the issue of how local authorities can promote the regeneration of historic towns and their heritage assets through the Towns Fund.
The micro-internship will give you the opportunity to develop your skills in research, strategic analysis and understanding of regeneration. As most of our work involves historic buildings, this opportunity may suit someone with an interest in the historic environment. This micro-internship will help you to investigate and understand how current funding initiatives are attempting to support the regeneration of historic town centres.
Currently, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we expect all work to be undertaken remotely, however we will review working arrangements near the time of the internship. In any case, we will be available to brief you at the outset of the internship and to answer any queries as they arise. You will be supervised by one of our Senior Heritage Consultants.
We have hosted Oxford interns for the past three years, some of whom have since worked for us as paid freelance researchers.
The task is:
- To undertake an online search to identify areas which are in receipt of funding through the Towns Fund.
- To investigate emerging proposals in these areas and to identify any which involve the repair or re-use of heritage assets.
- To provide an overview of how the Towns Fund relates to other sources of funding, for example through Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund.
- To illustrate your findings with examples of heritage assets which could benefit from the Towns Fund.
-
You will produce a report or presentation, using your communication skills to convey the information in an engaging format. This is an ideal opportunity for someone interested in regeneration, planning and heritage.
Applicant Profile:

- Research skills
