A conversation with Dr Sandra Duffy Golden

In April 2025, the UK Supreme Court made a historic ruling on the interpretation of “sex” under the 2010 Equality Act, ruling that this refers only to sex recorded at birth, with potentially far-reaching implications for trans people’s access to appropriate medical care and single-sex facilities.

Join us in conversation with Dr Sandra Duffy Golden, University of Bristol, to discuss the implications of this ruling, what it does (and crucially does not) say, and where we might go next in protecting trans rights in the UK.

Dr. Sandra Duffy Golden (they/she) is Lecturer in Law at University of Bristol Law School. Their research expertise centres on the regulation of gendered identities in law, along with postcolonial law and reproductive justice. They hold a PhD from the Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway. Sandra is currently writing their first monograph, due to be published in late 2026, which explores the regulation of queer and trans identities in post/coloniality in Ireland and South Asia.
