Our research lunches provide a relaxed space for those who already engage with queer studies to discuss their work, and for those who are interested in queer studies to find out how it is being used and how they themselves might engage with it, without any requirement of prior preparation.
This week, Frances Whorrall-Campbell (MSt History of Art and Visual Culture) will be talking about the work of queer writer, artist and curator Ian White (1971-2013), and how, through a camp appropriation of modernism, White’s performances comment on sexual and labour politics in the twenty-first century. Lewis Roberts (BA English) will speak about the recent rediscovery of Simeon Solomon’s reputation as one of the leaders of Pre-Raphaelite painting. This talk will unearth two previously lost literary works in order to contribute to the history of an author who epitomises the enigmatic and obfuscating poetics of the Pre-Raphaelites.
