This seminar explores the transmission of Alexander the Great’s legend in poetry and prose through illuminated manuscripts from the Bodleian Libraries. Starting from Pseudo-Callisthenes and going eastwards through different languages and cultures, the aim is to provide an overview of Alexander’s portrayal in Middle Eastern and Central Asian poetry and book arts from the Early Middle Ages to the Early Modern period. This will offer insights into past artistic, religious, and social contexts and how diverse cultures viewed their own history through the legend of Alexander.
