Andreas Björklund is a doctoral candidate in Anthropology researching what happens when stateless persons from Kuwait - known as the Bidoon - seek asylum in Europe. Difficulties and dilemmas arise as stateless persons are asked to prove their identities according to the expectations of European migration agencies and authorities, especially in terms of what documentation they may or may not have. He specifically studies issues around identification: how identities are imagined, reproduced, and contested during the asylum process and when various groups of Bidoon in Europe organise for communal support and to make collective claims. He is also interested in engaged scholarship and has participated in several leave to remain cases involving Kuwaiti Bidoon as a witness before the asylum and immigration tribunal in the UK. Andreas holds an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA in Arabic and Politics from SOAS, University of London.
Human X Project is a collaboration between an academic researcher AndreasBjorklund, film-director Dea Gjinovci and Nasser Al-Anezy from the Kuwaiti Community Association, a community centre for Kuwaiti Bidoon in Britain. Find out more here.
