Professor Karen Leeder Wins National Translation Award 2020

TORCH is delighted to congratulate Professor Karen Leeder on her receipt of a National Translation Award 2020 for her achievements as a translator of works of Austrian Literature, with special reference to her translation of Evelyn Schlag All Under One Roof (Carcanet 2018).

All Under One Roof is her second translation of poetry by Austrian writer Evleyn Schlag and was a Poetry Book Society Selection in Summer 2018 and one of the Daily Telegraph’s books of poetry of 2018. Her translation of Schlag’s Selected Poems (Carcanet, 2004) won the Schlegel-Tieck Prize 2005. Schlag is the recipient of the Austrian State Prize for Literature and was awarded the Gold medal for literature at Hay in 2018.

Professor Karen Leeder has previously been a TORCH Knowledge Exchange Fellow, working with the Southbank Centre, London and curating a series of events exploring aspects of modern European poetry and its transmission. Earlier this year she was a speaker at our Big Tent! Live EventVoices from the Wings: Poetry, Performance and Translation on and off the page’ alongside poet and performer Ulrike Almut Sandig.
